What Is a Slot Multiplier?

A multiplier multiplies a win by a number. A £2 win with a 5x multiplier becomes £10. Multipliers can apply to a single win, to all wins in a spin or to every win during a bonus round.

Types of Multipliers

TypeHow it works
Wild multiplierA wild that multiplies any win it is part of
Free spins multiplierAll wins during free spins are multiplied
Progressive multiplierGrows with each cascade or consecutive win (1x, 2x, 3x…)
Random multiplierApplied at random to a spin's total win
Multiplier symbolsSymbols carrying values that add to or multiply the win
Bet multiplierWins shown as multiples of your stake, e.g. scatter pays

Multipliers and Volatility

Slots with large or uncapped multipliers are usually high volatility: many spins pay little, but the rare big multiplier can produce a huge win. If you prefer steadier play, look for games where multipliers are smaller but more frequent. Our slot reviews list each game's volatility and maximum win.

Multipliers and Other Features

Multipliers are often combined with free spins, Megaways cascades and wilds. In table games such as live roulette, random multipliers are also used on straight-up numbers.

How Multipliers Combine

When several multipliers apply to the same win, slots either add them or multiply them together, and the difference is huge. Two wild multipliers of 2x and 3x give a 5x multiplier if added, but 6x if multiplied. Some slots multiply several large multipliers together, which is how wins of thousands of times the stake become possible.

Multipliers in Free Spins

Free spins rounds often feature the biggest multipliers. Common designs include a fixed multiplier on every win (for example, all wins tripled), a multiplier that increases with each cascade and does not reset between spins, or multipliers collected during the round and applied at the end. These features are a big part of why the free spins round accounts for a large share of a slot's RTP.

Tips for Multiplier Slots

  • Check whether multipliers are added or multiplied – it changes the maximum win potential.
  • Look at the max win in the game info to understand the upside.
  • Use smaller stakes on high-volatility multiplier slots so your budget can survive long dry spells.
  • Try the demo to see how often meaningful multipliers appear.

FAQ
How do multipliers work in slots?

They multiply a win by a set number. A 3x multiplier turns a £5 win into £15.

What is a progressive multiplier?

A multiplier that increases with each consecutive win or cascade, often resetting at the end of the spin or bonus.

Do multiplier slots pay more?

Not on average – multipliers are part of the RTP. They make big wins possible but usually increase volatility.

What is the difference between additive and multiplicative multipliers?

Additive multipliers are added together (2x + 3x = 5x), while multiplicative ones are multiplied (2x × 3x = 6x), which leads to much bigger potential wins.
