Why Do Online Casinos Offer Free Demo Play?

Online casinos make money when people play for real stakes, so it can seem strange that so many of them – including sites popular with players in New Zealand – let visitors play almost every slot for free. This is not about free spins from a bonus: in demo mode you simply open a game, get a balance of play money and spin without depositing anything.

• Trust. Many people are nervous about depositing at a site they do not know. Letting them try the games first removes a big barrier.
• Learning the game. Modern slots have cascading reels, multipliers and bonus rounds. Demo play lets players learn how a game works without risking money.
• Marketing. A player who enjoys a slot in demo mode is more likely to come back and play it for real. For the casino, free play is a cheap and effective form of advertising.
• Game providers want it too. Studios release demo versions so their new titles reach as many players as possible.

Some casinos show only part of their library in demo mode, or ask you to register before playing for free. Live dealer games are almost never available as demos, because they use real tables and staff.

Demo games use the same maths as the real versions, so they are a good way to learn the features, see how often bonus rounds trigger and decide whether you like a game’s style and pace.

What a demo cannot do is predict real results. Every spin is random, and a lucky run in demo mode does not mean the real game will pay the same way. Be wary of the idea that you can “work out a strategy” on a slot – there is none that changes the odds. A few things also differ when you play for money:

• the return to player (RTP) of some games can vary between casinos, so check the game rules for the real-money version;
• bonus terms and wagering rules only apply to real-money play;
• it is easy to bet far bigger stakes with play money than you would with your own.

Use demo play to shortlist games, then set a budget before switching to real money and keep your stake at the level you planned. You can try hundreds of titles for free in our free casino games section, and read our slot reviews to see RTP, volatility and features before you play.
